The Pontifical Residence Museum is located in the upper floors of the Pontifical Residence of the Catholicos. The building is collectively referred to as the Veharan. It is the private residence and official offices of the Catholicos of All Armenians. The construction of the Pontifical Residence was started on June 6, 1910. The building was completed in 1915 and later was renovated in 1962.

At that time of its reopening, Catholicos Vazken I (1955-1994) founded a small gallery on the second floor housing paints of renowned Armenian artists, including Hovhannes Ayvazovski, Mardiros Sarian, Hagop Kodjoyan, Vartkes Soureniants, and others. All had been gifts to the Armenian Church from throughout history. The paintings of Russian and Eastern European artists are placed in another hall, including a collection of valuable Russian icons.

The Armenian Alphabet, made of gold and precious stones, attached to onyx plaques (80 x 130 cm) and the Holy Cross are among most favourite items of the museum, and are masterpieces of 20th century Armenian Art. The Armenian cross embodies the centuries’ old tradition of Armenian cross-stone, jewellery and miniature art and recreates them in a completely innovative way. The Armenian alphabet is also a unique piece of art, each of the letters in itself is a masterpiece.
