Karmravor Church, A beauty-tiny cross-like church with red roof from VII c.

The Karmravor Church is an exquisite one located in Ashtarak (Diocese of Aragatsotn), spread out in and above the gorge of Kasakh River. The city is endowed with old churches, Karmravor being one of the most known among them. Why is it so special? It is a rare monument of the 7th century that has remained almost intact; even the tiled roof is preserved. It's not only the tiled roof, which is very seldom in this region, it's also the size of the building: the cruciform church is only 6 to 7 meters high. It's a kind of different from the standard church model and could be considered as a private chapel. For some people Karmravor is a dream place for isolating with thoughts. Quite understandable, imagine praying standing right in the centre of the cross itself. Embodiment of beauty and harmonious symmetry! It’s more than worth visiting to enhance the spirit of the 7th century and to visit its sister churches nearby.

Miracles/Legends:

Karmravor translated means “reddish”. In Armenian History the apricot (or red) colour is symbolic. It is associated with the nobility, majesty and the glory of Kings because of the apricot colour garment they were wearing. For sure, the Royals’ outfit was carefully designed to enforce their influence on people. Thus the colour has revealed its magic ability and interfered into most spheres of Armenian culture.
