Tatev Monastery
The Monastery of Tatev is located next to more than 100 metres deep gorge of the Vorotan River. According to historians the Tatev hosted a small community of monks in the 4th century. A small chapel was built there at those times. In the course of time it grew into a major religious, cultural, and educational centre in the medieval times. By the 9th century, it was one of the largest and the most famous monasteries in Armenia with over 1000 monks, and by the 14th century it had become a major theological university with an impressive list of alumni: St. Hovhannes Vorotnetsi (John of Vorotan) and St. Grigor Tatevatsi (Gregory of Tatev), who are remembered in the divine liturgy of the Armenian Apostolic Church each Sunday, as well as the historian Matteos Jughayetsi (Mathew of Jugha). Architects Siranes (13th century) and Momik (14th century) had an immense input in designing and building this renown monastery and carving many beautiful khachkars over there. ![]()
