Goshavank (Nor Getik) MonasteryThe Monastery of Goshavank, known in ancient times as Nor Getik Monastery, stands near a village of the same name on the wooded valley of Tandzut, 23 kilometres from Dilijan. The Monastery was founded in 1181 on the day the first church, dedicated to St. Grigor Lusavorich (Gregory the Illuminator), was inaugurated by the renown monk, legal scholar and fable-writer Mkhitar Gosh, the author of the first Armenian codex. The small, elegant church of St. Gregory is accompanied with the Church of St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), Zhamatoun, the Library, chapels, the covered way, the refectory and numerous khachkars (Goshavank is famous for its khachkars with exquisite needlework carving). Once a influential monastic complex, now Goshavank embraces the pilgrims who visit it and provides an opportunity to pray beside its sacred walls.
